Patek Philippe Discontinues Nautilus Moonphase 5712A

On February 4, 2025, Patek Philippe confirmed the discontinuation of several models from its prestigious collection, including the Nautilus Moonphase 5712A, as part of its annual practice of making room for new releases ahead of the Watches & Wonders event. This adjustment coincides with the company’s strategy to refresh its offerings in response to the yearly increase in watch prices.

The Nautilus Moonphase 5712/1A-001, first introduced in 2006 to mark the 40th anniversary of the Nautilus series, has ended its nearly two-decade-long production. This model, along with others in the Nautilus line such as the 5719/10G-010 and two versions of the 7118, has been a favorite among collectors. The discontinuation follows a period of heightened demand and rising prices on the pre-owned market, initially sparked by rumors of its de-listing back in 2021.

Other notable Patek Philippe lines are also impacted by this year's cuts. The Aquanaut series sees the phase-out of Ref. 5167/1A-001, a model known for its steel bracelet. The Calatrava Travel Time Ref. 5524G, a 42mm white gold watch with a blue dial, and the luxurious Grand Complication Ref. 5208R-01 are also being discontinued. Additionally, the Split-Seconds Chronograph Ref. 5370P-011, renowned for its Grande Feu enamel blue dial, will no longer be produced.

These discontinuations mark a significant change in Patek Philippe’s catalog, reflecting the brand's ongoing evolution and its commitment to introducing new innovations while phasing out older models.

Tom Brady’s $740,000 Tourbillon at the Super Bowl

The 2025 Super Bowl LIX, held in New Orleans, took place this past weekend, where the Philadelphia Eagles emerged victorious against the Kansas City Chiefs. While the game captured the attention of millions, there was an equally captivating display of opulence off the field—luxury watches worn by high-profile celebrities.

Tom Brady, transitioning from legendary quarterback to broadcaster, wore a $740,000 Jacob & Co. Caviar Tourbillon. This watch, crafted from 18-karat gold and adorned with 338 diamonds and 224 yellow sapphires, features a complex flying tourbillon mechanism designed to counteract gravity's effects on its movement, enhancing its accuracy.

Philadelphia Eagles' running back Saquon Barkley, who arrived at the Caesars Superdome not just to play but to impress, sported a $348,000 Jacob & Co. Astronomia Solar Zodiac. This extraordinary timepiece is known for its domed face featuring a rotating depiction of the planets, made from precious gemstones, and a sun represented by a Jacob-cut 288-facet yellow diamond.

Other notable figures included Jalen Hurts, who accessorized with a Patek Philippe Nautilus (Ref. 5712R) as he arrived at the stadium. Celebrity sightings continued with Taylor Swift, whose choice of a diamond-studded Panthere de Cartier in rose gold added to the glamor. Michael Strahan opted for a Rolex Daytona Rainbow, set with a spectrum of gemstones, while Jay-Z was seen wearing a bold orange Richard Mille RM66 Flying Tourbillon "Rockstar." Serena Williams was not to be outdone, wearing an Audemars Piguet Code 11:59 Tourbillon Openworked, featuring a skeletonized movement housed in blue ceramic.

Kim Jones Departs Christian Dior After 7 Years

Kim Jones announced his departure from Christian Dior Menswear after a transformative seven-year tenure, effective January 31, 2025. This move has sparked widespread speculation in the fashion industry that Jones is poised to take a leading role at Burberry.

Jones joined Dior in 2018 and also served as the artistic director at Fendi following Karl Lagerfeld's death in 2020. His recent stepback from both prestigious roles has fueled rumors of his next significant career step. The fashion insider Instagram account 1Granary hinted at a potential shift to Burberry with a post captioned "Rumours whisper Burberry."

This potential appointment could lead to major changes at the top of luxury fashion. Daniel Lee, the current chief creative officer at Burberry, has faced challenges revitalizing the brand since his arrival from Bottega Veneta in 2022. Speculation suggests Lee might move to Jil Sander following the departure of its creative directors, Luke and Lucie Meier.

Additionally, JW Anderson is considered a likely successor at Dior menswear. Anderson has been successful at Spanish brand Loewe since 2013, and both Loewe and Dior fall under the LVMH conglomerate. This shift might necessitate changes in Dior's womenswear, currently led by Maria Grazia Chiuri, particularly if Anderson opts to design both men's and womenswear as he does at Loewe.

Jones's impact at Dior was marked by significant growth in the menswear division, with revenues increasing fivefold to over €1.2 billion from 2018 to 2023. His designs, which often blended artistic influences with streetwear, were popular among celebrities and included high-profile collaborations, such as with Travis Scott’s label Cactus Jack and Nike.

The speculated move to Burberry could be timely, as the brand has experienced instability under Lee's direction, including two profit warnings in 2024. Burberry's leadership changes in July 2024, with Joshua Schulman replacing CEO Jonathan Akeroyd, led to improved financial results during the Christmas season.

In his farewell statement, Jones expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to work at Dior, noting the support from Bernard and Delphine Arnault. Delphine Arnault, CEO of Dior Couture, praised Jones for his remarkable contributions and for reinterpreting the house’s heritage with his unique talent and creativity.

Elie Saab Buys a $598 Million Island in the Maldives

Dubai-based SAMANA Developers is partnering with the renowned luxury fashion house ELIE SAAB to create an opulent resort in the Maldives, named SAMANA Ocean Views Interiors by ELIE SAAB. This ambitious project, announced on January 29, 2025, is set to transform a 47,100 square meter area of the Maldivian archipelago into a haven of luxury.

The resort will be accessible by a 20-minute speedboat ride from Hanimaadhoo Airport or a 45-minute seaplane trip from Malé. It is designed to cater to upscale travelers with 190 premium accommodations that include beachfront villas, over-water bungalows, and poolside apartments. The construction of the resort is slated to begin after a preliminary 120-day period dedicated to environmental engineering to ensure the protection of the local marine environment. The completion of this luxurious getaway is anticipated by 2029, promising a blend of fashion, luxury, and sustainability.
